President’s Day is also known as the “Washington’s Birthday“ or “George Washington’s Birthday” in United States (US). President’s Day is always celebrated on the 3rd Monday of February month every year.
This year President’s Day is celebrated on 17 February 2014 in United States specially Washington, DC. President’s Day is celebrated due to the honor of the birthday of first President of United States named George Washington. He was born on 22 February 2014. The president’s day specially focus on the working and the life style of the 1st President of the United States of America (USA). So President’s Day is a Federal holiday in USA.
WHY IT IS CELEBRATED?
On this day all the peoples pay their homage and regards to the past Presidents of USA due to the commemoration and tribute for independence. In 1865, the year after the murder of Abraham Lincoln, all the Americans starts celebrating Lincoln’c birthday on 12 February. So in the month of February, two federal holidays are celebrated on the honoring of two different presidents. That’s why in 1971, President Richard Nixon, combined the both federal holidays in to one holiday for both President’s birthday i.e. it is called President’s Day.
On this day all the city halls, libraries, public shops, markets, schools, colleges, beaches and government offices are closed on Washington’s Birthday. On this day parade ceremony is held in the Old Town Alexandria. This parade is the country’s largest Presidents’ Day Parade consisting of bands, wagons, horses, military officials, young youth groups, floats, historic reenactment units and the performing artists. Parade participants are fully covered with unique dress code in Colonial period costumes. Public fully enjoy this day because the celebration starts from 2 days ago and the longest weekend of the February month.
